Retreat Reading

Remember this post about my summer reading?

I'm only a quarter of the way through the N.T. Wright book. It's very readable but I'm finding it slow going regardless.

I am heading off on retreat to Mt. Calvary Monastery in Santa Barbara, and so I've made the important decision as what to bring.

Two books from this pile:

Found: A Story of Questions, Grace and Everyday Prayer by Micha Boyett
The First Paul: Reclaiming the Radical Visionary Behind the Church's Conservative Icon by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan

And then one for fun borrowed from a friend:

The Fear Sign: An Albert Campion Mystery by Margery Allingham

And we'll see if I have to resort to the monastery's library after that!

  1. I feel so silly - I forget that you live in the US not England anymore. Doh!

Anything by Bonhoeffer is worth reading. I haven't delved into NT Wright; I've still got paralysis from my youth because he was one of our forbidden writers. What all have you read by him?

  2. NT Wright was verboten? I read his "Simply Jesus" which I found quite readable and am still slogging my way through NT Wright (actually, I'm on a break. Got to get my bible study reading done now that I've finished The First Paul)

    1. Very verboten. In fact, my childhood denomination almost split over Wright's so-called new perspective on Paul. For evangelicals, especially Calvinists, Wright's theology is not just heretical, but I goes completely against the Gospel. I'm thinking I should read the fellow though, because I still get panicky when I read Paul, too much baggage of the Calvinist variety.

  3. ooh, then you should read The First Paul by Marcus Borg and Dominic Crossan. NT Wright is walk in the park (albeit the same ballpark -- am not sure I can mix my metaphors much more than that.) Made my head spin. Also, made me wonder, if it's really this straightforward how come Romans is hard to read?
